An Intimate Fairytale Wedding in a Castle in the Highlands of Scotland
After postponing their wedding for a year, Claire and Tom were finally able to marry in June. Following the initial disappointment of having to change their plans, Claire told us that looking back they feel so happy that they got the chance to do something they would have never imagined. They planned their own intimate fairytale wedding at a Castle in the Highlands of Scotland and are looking forward to a reception at their local village hall in August.
They had a Humanist ceremony which told their story. They wrote their own vows and practised some Scottish traditions of handfasting and drinking from the Quaich (first drink as a married couple to symbolise sealing the bond).
They had visited Eilean Donan Castle just after getting engaged three years ago, so it held special memories for them. Claire told us “It was so beautiful, and a magical setting for a wedding.”
How They Met
Claire and Tom met on their first day at De Monfort University. They lived opposite each other in halls. They were friends for 5 years before they started going out. Claire said “It wasn’t love at first sight, but we fell in love at exactly the right time.”
They got engaged on the Jacobite steam train (better known as the Hogwarts Express) in Scotland. They were journeying through the beautiful Scottish Countryside when Tom got on one knee in the aisle and proposed.
Due to the pandemic they had to change their original plans completely. They had an intimate ceremony with 27 people. Claire told us how happy they feel that it all worked out the way it did. She described the day as relaxed, intimate and personal.
Claire’s Dress Me Pretty Experience
I had an amazing experience at Dress Me Pretty. My dress was actually the first one I tried on. I tried 4 in total in different styles, but knew this was ‘the one’. I was a bit nervous and self-conscious as it was only 3 months after having my daughter. My stylist was absolutely brilliant, she made me feel confident and she actually recommended my dress from what I described I was wanting over the phone.
I had appointments with Kerry and Amy, who were both fabulous with helping me find the perfect pieces. Dress Me Pretty have such an amazing team and really made me feel special in helping me find my dress and accessories.
I’ve never felt so beautiful. I felt confident and comfortable. It fit perfectly and loved every minute in it.”
How did you feel on your big day?
Everyone who has planned a wedding through the pandemic will know how stressful it can be, but Claire told us that when her day came she felt totally relaxed. She said “I think I knew that by that point ‘what was done was done’, and that no matter what happened, we would be married at last! We really had a wonderful day, I absolutely loved it and we both felt so happy.”
Claire’s Special Memory of the Day
Claire couldn’t pick just one! She described her day as being truly magical. She said being able to celebrate with their nearest and dearest in such an intimate way was just lovely. There were also a few surprises along the way including video messages from friends and family from further afield who couldn’t be with them and local friends gathering outside the church for the confetti toss and a cheeky glass of bubbles! Claire said they felt truly loved and special because of the extra effort everyone went to.
Claire’s Advice for Brides-to-be
“It will all be worth it, and it will all come together. If you’re deciding on going ahead with an intimate wedding, you won’t regret it. Our day was so personal and special, and if we could go back, we wouldn’t change a thing.”
